In May 2015 Glenesk Thoroughbreds consigned their first ever draft at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Comprising of 8 mares, we ended the sale with 7 sold, and an average sale price of $299,643 – the 2nd highest average at the sale (6 or more sold). Undoubtedly the highlight came for us early on Day 1 when Champion Sprinting filly VILLA VERDE (by NOT A SINGLE DOUBT) sold for $1.1 million to James Bester Bloodstock, acting for Kia-Ora Stud. An amazing result for our first ever lot through the Magic Millions sale ring. Thank you to Robbie Willis and Mike Buys for entrusting your wonderful mare to us, and we wish Kia Ora Stud the very best with her future.
VILLA VERDE, a Group 2, was the Joint Top Filly of the 2013/14 Australasian 3YO Classifcation (Sprint). She comes from an illustrious family including the champion sprint sire and Golden Slipper winner RORY’S JESTER and Caulfield Cup winner SOUTHERN SPEED.
Competition came from different areas of the ring and eventually came down to a battle from bloodstock agents James Bester at the front and Dean Hawthorn at the rear. Hawthorn held $1 million before Bester, on the phone, countered with $1.1 million and that enabled him to sign for the mare.
“She was without doubt the best individual in the sale and the fastest mare. This was the favourite for the Golden Slipper before Christmas of her two-year-old career and she ended up being the top sprinting filly of her three-year-old career,” said Bester.
“She was awesomely fast and she did not quite achieve her potential. In my view she was a Group 1 mare. She is an extraordinary physical type of mare and that is just the type of two-year-old speed horse that they were looking for to send to Deep Field.
“She was purchased for Ananda Krishnan’s Kia Ora Stud, an owner of DEEP FIELD with Alan Bell and Newgate Farm. Ananda wanted to buy a speedy precocious mare to get DEEP FIELD off to a good start,” he said.
